Resilience and Regeneration
The evolution of Fabric
The Fabric neighbourhood owes its name from the factories and workshops established in the 18th and 19th centuries along Bega's various banks and meanders, leaving traces that are still visible today and that we will learn to recognize together. The tour follows the evolution of this territory, from its initial centres, situated on either side of the river, to the neighbourhood that is now undergoing a process of urban regeneration.
The route explores the relationship between the neighbourhood's communities and its built heritage, in the past, the present, and possible future directions. We will discover how the connection between the city and public green spaces has changed over time, beginning with the hygienist revolution of the 19th and 20th centuries, which transformed the way urban society viewed sanitation, air, and nature, and continuing with contemporary development directions that can bring green-blue infrastructure closer to citizens. Timișoara's first public park, located in Fabric, will become the pretext for an analysis of how we relate to urban green spaces and how we can protect them.
Today, Fabric is under construction, awaiting the remodeling of its public space, and is also the object of an urban plan for protected built areas. We will examine how such projects can preserve and highlight the neighbourhood's historic character while, at the same time, anchor it in the present. The route will end at the Fabric Synagogue, which is undergoing refunctionalization in order to be opened to the general public, a concrete example in this regard.
